Carbon
black is a key input for the rubber processing and
chemicals industry. Its largest use is in the manufacture
of tyres, and it is also used to produce paints,
dyes, inks and conveyor belts. Hi-Tech Carbon is
the second largest producer of carbon black in India.
It has 33 per cent of the domestic market share
having its manufacturing facility at Renukoot in
Uttar Pradesh and at Gummidipoondi, near Chennai,
in Tamil Nadu. The combined capacity stands at 2,30,000
mtpa.
Both
the units are certified ISO-TS16949; ISO 14001
and OHSAS 18001. The coveted Deming Award for
Quality (2002) was conferred on the carbon black
unit at Gummidipoondi by the Deming Prize Committee
(JUSE), Japan. This unit also has the ISO17025
NABL certificate to its credit.
The
company is one of the lowest cost producers and
has the locational advantage of being near the sea
coast. Hi-Tech Carbon also gets value contribution
from energy sales. It has completed brownfield expansion
by 60,000 tpa at Gummidipoondi in July 2007.
The Aditya Birla Group has a capacity of producing
750,000 mtpa of carbon black, making it the world's
fourth largest producer of carbon black. Internationally,
the Group has carbon black facilities at its Alexandria
Carbon Black unit in Egypt, Thai Carbon Black Public
Company Ltd in Thailand and Liaoning Carbon Black
unit in China.
