As
the Aditya Birla Group consolidates its position
across diverse businesses, one organisation is
steadily making its presence felt. Welcome to
Birla Sun Life Insurance Company Limited (BSLI),
the youngest member of the Birla Sun Life combine,
and amongst the newest aspirants to take its place
under Aditya the sun. In addition to retaining
our position as number two player in the life
insurance business (among private sector companies),
BSLI has been ranked number one life insurance
company to work for, with an overall ranking of
number nine, in the "great places to work"
survey, covering close to 120 companies. For a
fledgling organisation to have achieved this milestone,
is indeed commendable.
The
circle of life
The
life insurance business in India, was till recently,
driven by a regulated environment. In the year 1999,
the government of India took a very progressive
step, to de-regulate this business thereby paving
the way for private players to partake of the available
business opportunity. This decision saw the advent
of private sector life insurance companies bringing
in a new and refreshing perspective to the complex
world of life insurance.
A
regulatory body, the Insurance Regulatory and
Development Authority (IRDA) was created to be
a watchdog to ensure fair practice, and to maintain
a level playing field. One of the guidelines issued
was that every private player would get into a
joint venture with a foreign partner and form
a coalition. The equity pattern was to be in the
ratio of 74:26, 74 per cent being with the domestic
partner, and 26 per cent with the foreign entity.
As the sector looked promising, some of the best
performing life insurance companies from across
the world made an entry into India through tie-ups
with various renowned Indian corporations.
Seeing
the potential, our Group decided to extend its
existing joint venture tie-up with Sun Life Financials,
headquartered in Canada, to the realm of the life
insurance business as well. The joint venture
had an existing interest in mutual funds at that
time. The respect of the Birla name, coupled with
the 150-year-old credentials of Sun Life, leaders
in wealth management, represented a joint venture
partnership with a great pedigree. Creating a
niche and gaining the trust and confidence of
the people of a nation was the biggest challenge
for all the new companies. This was the scenario
in which BSLI had to draw its own strategy to
gain the riveting attention of the market.
BSLI
started its operations in 2001, and in a short
span of three years, has established its position
as a dominant and influential player in the deregulated
private sector life insurance business arena.
Fast
forward
Looking ahead, BSLI's aim is to ensure that it achieves
and maintains its position amongst the top three
private sector players in the market. The market
potential is large, as 80 million people in the
country have bought insurance policies as compared
to an estimated 350 million insurable population.
The goal is lofty but the spirit to achieve it is
even stronger. Consider this:
|
|
The
business planning process at BSLI is reckoned
to be extremely strong and well thought through. |
 |
 |
|
|
The
kind of brand equity that the BSLI brand enjoys
is significantly superior to that of competitor
companies. This gains added significance,
as this has been achieved at a fraction of
the cost that competitor organisations have
spent. |

Our

foresight by enabling BSLI to be the first
company to make life insurance available over
the internet. |
 |
 |
|
|
BSLI
has consistently met its rural obligations.
|
 |
 |
|
|
Our

locations, spanning the length and breadth
of India with 33 branches. |
 |
 |

The
vibrant culture and dynamism of BSLI makes
it a fun place to work in. The workplace provides
avenues for an optimum mix of light-hearted
moments which reflect in enhanced productivity. |
Beating
stress with masti
Keeping pace with our rapid expansion, has been
a steadily rising headcount, touching 1,253 employees
(as on 12-12-2003). With 55 per cent of our workforce
under 30 years of age, and a total of a whopping
97 per cent under 40 years, we are talking about
an incredibly young organisation. Keeping this
youthful workforce constantly on the go was the
challenge we faced. Enter the MSLI Team, which
is an acronym for Masti The BSLI Way. MSLI
was started with a clear mandate aimed at making
BSLI a "fun" place to work in and thereby
reduce stress levels. The whole process is driven
internally using company representatives.
The
underlying objective is to leverage on internal
talent available and give them opportunities to
exhibit their skills such as creative thinking,
fine arts, and at the same time, introduce activities
which would otherwise be ignored.
BSLI
rocks!
Every
month, a "theme" is chosen and activities
held, e.g. the theme for the month of August was
Independence Day, where every BSLI member in the
Head Office, wore specially designed tri-coloured
"Gandhi topis" and worked. Similarly,
in another month, a "graffiti day" was
held, where BSLI employees were asked to pen their
thoughts on subjects such as "my dream office",
"ek din ka CEO", and so on. From
events showcasing the kite flying skills of employees
to having a rip-roaring experience, mimicking the
mannerisms of the CEO and function heads in public,
to having BSLI's very own olympic games, the MSLI
Team has been in the thick of it all.
What
is most heartening is that at the end of the day,
after the conclusion of yet another event, the
MSLI Team goes back, happy in the belief, that
they could make a few more people look forward
to get to work the next day.
The
verdict works!
From
the time of its inception in a hitherto unexplored
business domain for our Group, BSLI has emerged
as a vibrant and dynamic business entity, carving
out a niche for itself in the Group's interests
in the field of financial services.
Some of our achievements till date:
|

Smiles
to go
It's
still early days for BSLI. With most organisations
in the life insurance business, chasing the same
critical mass of people, it is going to be one great
race. The ability to retain the top performers,
converting mediocre performers into quality employees,
and ruthlessly maintaining a normal distribution
curve, will pose an ever-present challenge for BSLI.
Building
and maintaining employee self-belief is going to
be our critical focus area. To facilitate this,
BSLI will travel the extra mile to provide employees
with a work environment that will stretch them intellectually
and provide them with joy at work through quality-rich
HR interventions such as specific recognition programmes.
A lot of time and effort will be put on developing
talent. Through the dint of our combined efforts,
we would like to build BSLI into the very fabric
and psyche of the workforce. 'You can take a man
out of BSLI, but you can never take BSLI out of
a man' is the state of extreme tranquillity that
we would like to accomplish some day. There
are still miles to go, but with the taste of success
still lingering around us, we will march forward,
enjoy our victories, learn from our failures, recognise
and reward talent, and make the Aditya Birla Group
and Sun Life Financials proud of their newest offering."
K.H. Venkatachalam.
The
last word
"It
is indeed a matter of great pride for all
of us in BSLI to be associated with the Aditya
Birla Group and Sun Life Financials. Together,
they represent what can arguably be called
a winning combination. The superb pedigree
of the JV partners combined with the enthusiasm
of a young workforce, has made BSLI the organisation
that it is today.
Through prudent financial management, unremitting
focus on sales and innovative people practices,
our endeavour has and will continue to be,
towards remaining at the forefront of growth.
Consolidating our position as a serious player
in the life insurance business will be a key
driver for us. I believe and would like to
reiterate that people are our single most
important resource, and we will focus on their
welfare and development.
With
leadership comes responsibility, and even
as we realise our vision of being amongst
the top three insurance companies in our
sector, we cannot rest on our laurels. We
will celebrate our successes, be a learning
organisation and do the very best for all
our stakeholders."
Mr. Nani Javeri, CEO, BSLI
